Teaching Model: Reading is taught with “flexible grouping.”  This model is used to be able to work with students in a small, focused group of 5-10 children.  We have wonderful discussions about our reading, and each student can share his/her thoughts.

 As a teacher, my goal is to help all students, of all abilities.  These small groups allow for more individualized attention, and allow the teacher to work to meet the needs of each group.  Students who need extra support in reading and comprehension will receive it.  Similarly, students who need a challenge can work with more challenging concepts and comprehension related to their reading.

            While the teacher works with each group, other students are quietly working independently on papers and activities that reinforce the skills taught in the groups.  This model of teaching reading allows for success from all students.  Students are working to their best potential.

Open Court Reading

            Open Court Reading Series: The Open Court Program for fourth grade is a comprehensive reading and language arts program.  Each week the students are exposed to key word knowledge principles, vocabulary, grammar concepts, reading comprehension strategies, and word knowledge.  The fourth grade program is composed of 6 units each with their own theme.  The themes are as follows: Unit 1: Risks and Consequences; Unit 2: Dollars and Sense; Unit 3: From Mystery to Medicine; Unit 4: Survival; Unit 5: Communication; and, Unit 6: A Changing America.

            The comprehension strategies that will be utilized in fourth grade include but are not limited to:

             *Cause and Effect

            * Compare and Contrast

    *Author’s Purpose

           *Making Predictions

           * Drawing Conclusions

   * Making inference

         * Visualizing

          * Summarizing

 Literature Circles

         Literature Circles: In addition to the Open Court reading program, periodically during the year, students will be asked to participate in Literature Circles or Book Clubs.  Students will be offered several books to choose from, from a variety of genres and at a variety of levels.  When possible, students who are participating in B.O.B. will be allowed to read a book from their reading list.  Here is a list of some of the many books we might be using:

     . Sarah Plain and Tall

     . Skylark

     . George's Marvelous Medicine

     . The Twits

     . The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

     . Esperanza Rising

     . Island of the Blue Dolphin

     . The Big Wave

 Vocabulary

Vocabulary is integrated into each of the Open Court stories as well as into each of the Literature Circle Books.  We also will use other vocabulary programs to develop a good understanding of the English language.

In addition, we also use Wordly Wise 3000. Wordly Wise allows students to experience lists of words and learn their meanings by applying their knowledge of the word's definition.  Instead of learning lists of words and their definitions, students are required to use the words in matching, sentence creation, and in reading comprehension.

Book Raffle

In order to motivate at-home reading students' will be keeping a book log every quarter were they can keep track of all the reading they do throughout the year. Students' will be expected to get parent signatures throughout the reading process, and are expected to turn it in  their book logs along with their"sticker" bookmark when they have completed a book.  For every book they read they will obtain a sticker and the more books they read the more chances they have of winning a prize at the end of the quarter.
